Voice Over Actor
Voice & Speech in the Theatre by J. Clifford Turner, This is a classic book on voice and speech, designed for actors at all levels. First published in England in 1950, and now substantially revised for its fifth edition by Malcolm Morrison, it is now published for the first time in North America. Voice and Speech in the Theatre explains how breath, note, tone and word combine to create voice. One of the great voice teachers of his day, J. Clifford Turner here uses simple and direct language to impart the necessary technical 'basics' of speech and voice. He then provides extensive exercises to help you master breath control, articulation, tone, and other essential elements of the actor's craft. The book includes a wide variety of exercises -- some using nonsense sounds, others using Shakespeare, Whitman, Tennyson, and other literary materials -- to strengthen the control of vowels, of breath, and voice production. Many of these exercises are newly created for this edition by Malcolm Morrison. Turner's goal is to help the actor strengthen the voice so that it becomes the servant of the actor's will and feeling. Far from encouraging hammy, theatrical speaking, Turner warns that 'anything in the voice which calls attention to itself, either because the actor appears to be voice conscious, or because the utterance is defective in some respect, will make a performance bad, shallow, or otherwise unconvincing.
The Actor Speaks: Voice and the Performer by Patsy Rodenburg, In" The Actor Speaks, Patsy Rodenburg takes actors and actresses, both professional and beginners, through a complete voice workshop. She touches on every aspect of performance work that involves the voice and sorts through the kinds of vexing problems every performer faces onstage: breath and relaxation; vocal range and power; communication with other actors; singing and acting simultaneously; working on different sized stages and in both large and small auditoriums; approaching the vocal demands of different kinds of scripts. This is the final word on the actor's voice and it's destined to become the classic work on the subject for some time to come.
